Scottish scientists convert whiskey waste into biofuel

Whisky waste is turned into biofuel if you get it in Scotland that is

Cnet.com has come to us with details about scientists at Edinburgh Napier University’s biofuel Research Center. Evidently these scientists in Scotland can now make butanol biofuel with simple Scotch whisky by-products. An MIT Technology review explains that biofuels like ethanol aren’t as good in butanol considering these products get thirty percent more energy. This could raise miles per gallon for you. Butanol is better than ethanol in efficiency. There is a 25 percent difference, says Sky News.

Ethanol isn’t as great as the new whisky biofuel when it comes to limitations

Butanol is not limited like ethanol is. Butanol doesn’t have to mix with regular gas as ethanol does. This is because butanol is already a key part of gasoline. Furthermore, as Technology Review reports, butanol is easier to transport through pipelines than ethanol, as it does not absorb water in the exact same manner as ethanol.

Anybody who’s a fan of corn

Tax credits, favorable tariffs and government subsidies are all accessible to U.S. corn growers. This is because of the Renewable Fuel Standard. There can be a new mix since the Fueling Freedom plans calls for higher ethanol mix caps showing the ethanol industry has power, says the Basitiat Institute. This is bad news. Taxpayers could have more things to pay.

The government needs to get the ethanol lobby of their backs, says Bastiat. The taxpayers already pay way too much for research on ethanol fuel right now. Fuel efficiency would definitely do better with a bit of whiskey-based butanol. Octane would do better if there was less than 10 percent of ethanol though. Research into cheaper methods of producing butanol would more worthy of taxpayer dollars.
